Region II Assistive Technology Center’s primary goal is to promote development of teacher and support staff use and implementation of assistive technology and Universal Design for Learning strategies to promote students with disabilities access to their individualized and/or the general education curriculum.
The Region II Assistive Technology Center is sponsored by the Iberville Parish Schools system.
Participants from Iberville, Pointe Coupee, and West Baton Rouge parishes took part in training incorporating overviews of free and commercial text-to-speech (TTS) software to enhance students’ reading comprehension and word recognition.Hands-on exploration of the free ReadPlease TTS software and e-text books that are available on the internet indicated that many students would likely benefit from access to these resources.Classroom use of TTS attributes and e-text supports differentiated instruction.

Visit the newest LDE website resources for teachers who need ideas for instructional modifications.Based on the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum correlated “extended standards” for students, the Access Guide offers a wide range of suggestions for adapting class work and teaching based on student learning styles.Starting with the 4th and 8th grades as conduits for expansion, the Access Guide will be an on-going developing invaluable tool. The Significant Disabilities website combines free augmentative communication activity resources along with downloadable examples of GLE units that have been modified for students needing academic content presented at their ability level.

The Region II Assistive Technology Center is part of a Louisiana Department of Education's project. The mission of the Louisiana Assistive Technology Initiative (LATI) is to provide leadership and support to local education agencies and families in the development and implementation of assistive technology services that will have meaningful application for the educational, social, recreational, vocational, and developmental experiences of students with disabilities.
